What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Several Shugyo branches now offer regular beginner classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). The self defence system, with origins in Japan and Brazil, is considered one of the most effective on the planet.
The moves taught in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are designed for close combat grappling using leverage, weight and position to enable a smaller opponent to overcome a bigger opponent.
Shugyo is affiliated with Roots Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professors Paulo Guimaraes and Benny Turnbull. The classes, run in Canberra (Farrer), Batemans Bay and Moruya have small numbers per instructor so you will receive strong, personal attention. BJJ classes are generally only available to ages (15+) and they are female friendly, offering a safe and exciting training space for everyone to learn at their own pace. You will be introduced to the basics as your body gets used to the new movements required in this style.
Students progress to Blue Belt from White Belt over 2-5 years of training, depending on the level of commitment. There are opportunities for students to compete in internal, state and national competitions.
