Frequently Asked Questions
How often can I train?
Fee structures vary slightly between regions, depending on what’s on offer. Generally a Regular membership will allow you to train twice a week and a Premium membership will allow you to train at all available sessions. Some areas, including Canberra and Batemans Bay, offer up to 5-sessions a week.
How often should I train?
As with any new skill, the more time you can dedicate to it the quicker you will learn. We recommend at least twice a week for beginners as you build the foundation for your new skills. Training too often at the beginning can also lead to burnout both physically and mentally. There are a lot of movements in martial arts that are totally unfamiliar to our bodies, and regular training is required to create the neural pathways. Once our bodies and minds are used to training after about 3-months, you can start to increase your load. There are a range of factors which should come into your decision, so consult your instructor for more specific advice to your case.
How much does it cost?
Most memberships work out to be around $10 per 1 hour session, if you are training twice per week. Give your local instructor a call to find out more.
How do I pay?
We have an online system and you can pay via credit/debit card, or in cash in some circumstances.
I have trained in a style other than taekwondo, can I join Shugyo?
Absolutely! Shugyo is looking for people with experience in other arts to contribute to our ever growing knowledge base. One of the core concepts behind Shugyo is to regularly critique the self defence techniques we use to ensure our students are receiving best practice. We hope you will bring your experience and join our community of like minded martial arts enthusiasts.
Can I travel with Shugyo?
Shugyo has been in New Zealand and Tonga now for several years. We run a camp in either Tonga or New Zealand once a year for Shugyo Australia students to experience the way they train over there. Prepare to find new friends and come home full of cultural inspiration!
There’s no Shugyo near me but I’d like to train with the school.
Several Shugyo instructors are full time and can travel to offer regular training sessions. If you have experience in martial arts and would like to bring Shugyo to a new area, give us a call to discuss franchise options.
Can I train with my kids?
Some areas offer joint sessions for adults and kids. The benefits are huge, with recent research showing that kids who do a sport with their parents when they’re young are much more likely to stick at it during their teenage years. Some regions have kids-only classes with adults sessions immediately afterwards. Check with your local instructor for more information.
Are there family rates?
Absolutely! We want families to benefit from discounted rates. The more people from your family join, the bigger your discount. Select your region you'd like to join and explore the family pricing options available.
